It was a women who was the head of a nasa mission control room (who desperately wants to be an astronaut). There are a lot of sci fi elements and secrets government cover-ups and all this other stuff that would be way to hard to explain without actually reading it. Its basically mad men (originally it took place in the 60’s) meets x files. I thought this would be a great setting for a tv show as well as an easy way to introduce these weird sci fi stuff. NBC thought so too and their show Mission Control is described as “Dr. Mary Kendricks (Krysten Ritter, “Don’t Trust the B—— in Apartment 23”) is a tough but brilliant aerospace engineer, leading a team of NASA scientists at the cutting edge of space exploration. The only problem is, this is the 1960s and she’s a woman. Navigating the ridiculous boys’ club of astronauts and engineering nerds is no easy task, but she’s up to the challenge…” which is just way too similar for people not to make the connection. I was gonna deal with the being a women thing but that was going to be in the background and not a main point of the show. I wanted a strong female lead with all of the attention on the job and not the fact that she’s a women. Thats kind of why I am changing the time period.
So I wrote a pilot earlier this year for one of my final. I loved it and my professor loved it and it had potential to actually be a show eventually. Then I go to check the new shows coming this fall and NBC basically turned my pilot into a comedy so now it just looks like I copied their show. Hopefully it will be one of NBC’s usual flops and by the time I’m passing my pilot around no one will have ever heard of their version
